Fashion Geeks

I just watched Ralph Lauren's 4D experience yesterday, and it was a great example of how the fashion world is embracing technology more and more (if you haven't seen the show, you must watch it!  It's breathtaking.)

There's no doubt that we now live in a world of technology.  The technological advancements in the past couple of decades have been enormous.  And the fashion world, known to always be one step ahead, is not going to let technology get the better of it.  Just look at what I'm doing now - blogging.  Fashion bloggers have made it to those coveted front row seats (mere seats away from Anna Wintour!), with the simple click of a button.

Back in Spring/Summer 2010, the late Alexander McQueen streamed his show live for thousands of fashion lovers:

Fashion films have become a common thing to have along with a collection:

And even Vogue has wrestled its way into our palms:

All this leads to the question: is this the way to go?  Is it good that front row seats are no longer reserved for those elite few?  That runway shows are instantly accessible to anyone with internet?  Now, I'm not one to say fashion should stay in the dark ages, and Ralph Lauren's 4D experience brings exciting new ways to present collections, but I do think that runway shows are special, and that the clothes are meant to be seen (and not from a screen!).  But as just an average person, I'm glad that I can watch any fashion show on Youtube on the day of its showing.  Just as long as fashion magazines don't get replaced.

  3. I think it's incredible that fashion is so accessible right now and I don't think it should be elite. Besides not everyone can afford those gowns or dresses but it's nice to see the craftsmanship and creativity of designers upclose and be inspired! xoxoxoxoo

  13. I believe that the easier "accessiblity" of fashion is good because the really interested people about fashion could be informed and could think about fashion with "fresh informations". But it also cause that a lot of people misunderstand the concept of fashion and think that the simple knowledge of 5 stupid famous fashion brands allow allows them to speak and critic the fashion world! (I hope that you understand my idea...)

I believ ethat the first and the ofurth pics express in the best way the concept of you post. Then I have to say that I totally love the Miu Miu shoes in the fourth photo...In the last 2 seasons (I'm referring to s/s and f/w 2010) Miu Miu, or better Miuccia, realizes wonderful shoes!!

  14. i definitely agree, you can't say you know fashion just because you are familiar with a few different high end labels (e.g. Burberry, Prada, YSL) Of course, these brands have lovely and inventive clothing, but everyone has their own style that is not defined by a single chic brand or trendy fashion. Fashion is different for everyone.

The Ralph Lauren 4-D show is amazing! i wish i could have seen it in person. Anyway, i think it's really amazing and remarkable how far technology has come and that whole internet thing that happened...woooeee!!

  16. What a great post! Totally in your camp! I'm torn between the digital revolution and the old-fashion (hwahwa) way. I love reading my magazines on the iPad, but I still run to the book store when the new issues arrive ;-)

And don't you love the way Tom Ford chose to present his first collection for women? I'm overexcited to see the photos in Vogue.

    Bisous!

  18. I agree that fashion being more accessible is great, especially for average people like me!

@Cupcake: Yeah...I'm on the fence about that. People like fashion editors worked hard to earn that front row seat, and then to have a child blogger snag a seat is a bit questionable. Front row seats are for people who have worked hard in the industry and who really need a good look at the clothes (editors, buyers...).

@E: I completely understand what you mean. But the Miu Miu shoes in the fourth photo? There are no Miu Miu... Not quite sure what you're referring to! :)

@LCT: Yes, we are quite similar! And wow, I haven't even checked out how he's presented the collection yet! But knowing Tom Ford, I'm sure it's a stunner.

  19. Yes! I think fashion should definitely be accessible! Everyone, absolutely everyone, wears clothes, why should it be so exclusive? Fashion brings people together!

  20. The fashion world is a lot more approachable and less mysterious these days=)

  21. There should always be fashion shows!! It's completely different then seeing it on the web.

  23. Yes, I too, feel that runway shows are so very special and the air of mystery that surrounds them makes them even more exciting. But I, too, love being able to feel as if I'm there, so I guess I'd choose to sacrifice a little mystery for the chance to "be there!"

Thanks so much for dropping by Violet's post of her interview with me today and leaving your sweet comment. As usual, she left a little note there for you as well for the next time you stop by. Have a wonderful week!

  27. I agree that fashion shows should be something special. but even with the show being 4D, the actual experience of sitting front row is still very much beatable than watching it on the screen in 4D!
