It Ads Up

Inspiration for my blog posts can come from anything.  Something I read, something I see, something I experience, or something I happen to think about.  For this post, inspiration came from reading the September 2010 issue of Vogue.
As we all know, the September issue of any magazine is always important.  It heralds the arrival of autumn and all the trends that come along with it.  And Vogue's September issue is always a good couple hundred pages, and a good couple pounds.  However, if you look, a significant portion of the magazine is composed of ads.  Generally, I flip through 1/3 of the magazine before I come to the editor's letter, which is the first actual piece of writing.
But contrary to what you might be thinking, I'm not using this against fashion magazines.  In fact, I don't mind flipping through pages and pages of ads.
As much as I read Vogue for its intellectual, relevant and exceptional articles, I don't mind taking a break and looking at some ads.  With fashion ads, they're most often a treat in themselves.  A good photographer, a good model and some good clothing can create something just as inspiring as a good article.
And besides, how would I know what a designer has been up to if I were never exposed to an ad campaign?  Ads are a way for designers to further communicate their vision, and for that, I say bring it on!

  1. I completely agree, I love flipping through ads, partly because they inspire me for my own fashion shoots but they are something I've loved ever since I began reading magazines. They are beautiful! :D

  2. I completely agree. Ads used to be my most favorite part of a fashion magazine along with editorials. There is a healing power in those beautifully crafted imagery I say.

Look forward to hearing from you.

  3. so true!!! ads definitely give a flavor of the designer's clothes, and they're also really entertaining and inspirational to look at. Some are even as artistic as the fashion spreads themselves!

  7. I always love most of the ads. But only the ones in Vogue, because they're always really pretty! But as much as I love them, Vogue must be addicted to ads because, as you said, it took me really long to get to the writing.
Btw, thanks for your lovely comment on my blog, I really appreciate it

  8. I simply agree with you. I believe that adv are so improtant in the fashion world...ANd sometimes the adv campaigns are truly "pieces of art". They are also used as something to communicate with the world (I'm thinking to the Givenchy transexual model) or to express, as you told, the vision of the designer but better of the brand. I think that in the fashion show we see the real vision of the designer and in the adv we can see the "commercial vision" of the designer. (it's not a critique to them...)

  10. I always love looking at ads in the fashion magazines! They informe me about what the designer is up to and what their new collection is like. I also like creative and provocative ads; it shows the photographer's imagination at its best.

I love your comment about the "Men of Style" on my blog. I agree that I don't really care if I love someone but I don't want him to dress in a sloppy way when I go out with him. And a guy who takes care of his appearance is always a positive thing in my opinion. :-) xoxoxoxoxo

  11. I think the ads is the most interesting part, I got some inspiration here and there whenever I read vogue, I read the editorials just to get some insight about the fashion industry, I flip through vogue like 4 times after I received it, I just have a specific way to read it lol

  20. You can get a lot of inspiration from ads, as you all say!

@E: Oh yes, the commercial side of designers! While fashion is art, it's also business, and it's great seeing how designers handle both aspects.

@M and Madeleine: Haha! I love reading the articles! A lot of the time, they are actually very funny and informative. There are some incredible writers out there. Ads are very inspirational, but I read magazines for their content. But I know a lot of people who skim through magazines, so it's quite common!
